The beauty behind “Betty”
Article written on October 31, 2006 • Posted by Admin

Sorry for the lack of updates as of lately. There aren’t that much going on with Salma at the moment, and I’ve been working hard on revamping my other site about Courteney Cox. Here’s an article, though, about Salma’s guest appearance in Ugly Betty in the coming episode.

“Salma Hayek, who’s been content to keep a low profile as an executive producer on her new hit series Ugly Betty, steps into the limelight this week when she appears on the ABC comedy.

In a four-episode story arc expertly timed for November sweeps, the stunning Mexican actress plays Sofia Reyes, a beautiful mystery woman who appears in the lobby of the Mode magazine offices. Instantly attracted to her, perpetually randy editor-in-chief Daniel Meade (Eric Mabius) asks for Betty’s (America Ferrera) help in finding her identity.

Hayek has appeared on the show once, as the maid in the telenovela watched religiously by Betty’s dad, Ignacio (Tony Plana).

‘I’m the only one on the show who started in telenovelas’, Hayek told reporters this summer at a conference for television journalists. ‘And it was a lot of fun to go back and do it. We were laughing so hard and Silvio Horta, the show’s writer, was so mean to me. He made the woman in the scene slap me. We kept going and going and everybody on the set was laughing’.

The Oscar-nominated actress’s association with Ugly Betty has caused a sensation in Hollywood, where she has already proven herself as a producer, on the 2002 art-house movie Frida. The film showcased the turbulent life of Mexican painter Frida Kahlo and won two Oscars.

Ugly Betty brings Hayek’s creative talents into the mainstream. Based on the wildly popular Colombian telenovela Betty La Fea, the series displays the star’s previously unseen mischievous side.

‘The original was groundbreaking because usually telenovelas are a lot more melodramatic but this one had an amazing sense of humor’, Hayek said. ‘And I immediately jumped on it. I am sure that the American audience is very thirsty for something like this’, Hayek said.

Fourteen million viewers later, Hayek was right all along. In bringing something from her culture to this country, one of the most glamorous women in Hollywood has also proven herself to be one of the smartest producers in the new television season.”
